Orca whales within 20 metres of shore in Nelson

11:49 am on 2 October 2009

A family of Orca whales playing within 20 metres of the Tasman Bay shore kept crowds of people entertained for about half an hour.

Motorists stopped to watch the male, which was at least six metres long, and the mother and baby whale.

The Department of Conservation says Orca have been seen in Tasman Bay a few times in recent years, but it is rare for them to be so close to shore.
