Gang involvement suspected in teenager's death

The acting area commander of the Rotorua police, Inspector Greg Sparrow, says there looks to be Mongrel Mob and Tribesmen involvement in the death of a Kaingaroa teenager.

Kaine Ernest Lewis, 17, died in Rotorua Hospital on Saturday after being found unconscious with serious head injuries in the driveway of a Murupara property.

During the investigation into his death, three people have been arrested on unrelated charges. Inspector Sparrow says they are not suspected of murder.

The police say they are making progress in their investigation but have declined to release further details, other than to say that they're considering whether gangs were directly involved with Mr Lewis's death.

Inspector Sparrow has appealed to people in Murupara to come forward with more information.
