American troops have set up a 300-bed field hospital on the Indonesian island of Sumatra,as a flotilla of US Navy ships brings aid for hundreds of thousands left homeless by last week's earthquake.

Efforts have shifted from searching for survivors amid the rubble to providing relief to villages cut off by massive landslides generated by the 7.6 magnitude quake.

Aid workers from at least 20 countries are now caring for the homeless after the quake destroyed up to 200,000 houses.

The official death toll has risen to more than 700 though thousands more are feared dead.
