Slips, power cuts as spring storm covers country

7:22 am on 11 October 2009

Rain, snow and gales in the North Island have toppled trees and power lines, cut electricity supplies and caused slips.

Some 1400 households were without electricity for about four hours on Saturday morning in Lower Hutt, north of Wellington, after high winds felled power lines.

The areas worst affected were Maungaraki, Normandale, Korokoro and Petone, Wellington Electricity Lines said.

Gales of up to 80 kilometres an hour brought down trees and power lines in Palmerston North on Friday night.

Palmerston North City Council says all streets in the town remain open despite trees having been blown over in Main St, Camp Rd, Ruahine St and Featherston St.

The Desert Road, State Highway 1 from Rangipo to Waiouru, has reopened, after being closed on Saturday morning due to snow.

State Highway 1 at Manukau in Horowhenua was closed for a time when a truck hit a fallen tree.

The Transport Agency warned motorists to take care on the Rimutaka Hill, north of Wellington, following an earlier slip. Slips had also been cleared on State Highway 3 just north of New Plymouth.

MetService recorded winds of 150 kilometres an hour on the Maui gas platform off the Taranaki coast on Friday night.

South Island

The snow eased in the South Island late on Friday, but motorists in mountain passes still need chains.

Chains are essential and no towing vehicles are allowed on State Highway 7 on the Lewis Pass from the Hamner Springs turnoff To Springs Junction.

The same applies on State Highway 73 from Springfield to Otira over Arthurs Pass.

Drivers of caravans and campervans are advised to take care along State Highway 6 from Westport To Charleston on the West Coast due to high winds.
