White wines dominate national wine competition

White wines dominate the entries in this year's national wine competition.

They make up two thirds of the 1657 wines entered in the Air New Zealand awards.

New Zealand Winegrowers says the high number reflects this years' successful white wine vintage.

Pinot noir has the highest number of entries in the red wine classes, 299.

There is a 45% increase in sustainable wine entries, with more than 260 in that category.

Nelson leads the way in that. Sustainably produced wines make up 37% of the region's entries.

But the Marlborough region has the biggest number of entries overall, 38% of the total.
