Workers involved in the transportation of live animals could face prosecution if they flout a new welfare code being proposed.
The National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC0 is seeking public feedback on proposed new standards covering the transport of all animals by air, land and sea.
NAWAC's Chair Peter O'Hara says while the standards in the current code are voluntary, the animal welfare act now requires them to have a legal standing.
Proposed minimum standards include equipment design and maintenance; preparation and selection of animals for transport; loading and unloading; the provision of food, water and rest and responsibilities to meet stockmanship, competency and code requirements.
Specific requirements for transport in emergencies and emergency humane destruction are also included.
The public has until the end of November to make submissions.
