Mayor goes to bat for overlooked highway

The Far North mayor says one of the country's most important tourism routes has been left off the priority list for government funding.

Wayne Brown says tiny State Highway 11, from Kawakawa to Paihia, is only classed as a state highway because it's the route to the Bay of Islands.

Like most Far North highways it needs work, he says, but it has been overlooked by the Transport Agency as a road of national significance.

Mr Brown acknowledges that Northland as a whole will benefit from the Government's planned improvements to State Highway 1 between Puhoi and Wellsford.
