Guilty plea over Hastings police officer assault

3:43 pm on 3 November 2009

A teenager has pleaded guilty in the Hastings District Court to the serious assault of an off duty police officer.

Detective Sergeant Dan Foley was punched and kicked in the head after trying to break up a fight outside a party in the Hastings suburb of Mahora last month.

He suffered a fractured eye socket, lacerations and bleeding to the brain, and spent a week in the intensive care unit of Hawke's Bay hospital.

City Timu, 17, was arrested the morning after the party and charged with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

His lawyer told the court his client offered a sincere apology to the victim.

Timu was remanded in custody for sentencing in five weeks.
