Striking academic staff from Wellington's Whitireia Polytechnic have staged a demonstration during Prince Edward's visit to the city.

The Tertiary Education Union says 113 members from Whitireia began industrial action on Tuesday.

It is part of a strike at six North Island polytechnics aimed at protecting leave entitlements and obtaining more than a 2% pay rise over two years.

About two dozen protesters chanted and waved placards during the Prince's visit to the polytechnic's Wellington Performing Arts centre on Wednesday morning.

He waved to the group before moving on.

It is the third day of his four-day visit to the country, which includes appearances in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.
