Quake rattles Chile

8:52 pm on 13 November 2009

A magnitude 6.5 quake shook northern Chile early on Friday but there are no reports of any damage or injuries, Chile's state emergency office says.

The emergency office ONEMI said the quake was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami.

The temblor, which struck just after midnight, rattled the northern region of Tarapaca, where it caused a power outage in the southern area of the regional capital of Iquique after a substation failed.

It was less intense in copper mine-rich Antofagasta.
