The Crown says a Chinese businessman charged with passport fraud in New Zealand was able to get the false documents because of his political connections in China.
Yong Ming Yan, 38, was granted citizenship in New Zealand before last year's election, a move that came under scrutiny because of support he had from some New Zealand politicians.
Mr Yan was granted citizenship after receiving letters of support from National MP Pansy Wong and former Labour MP Dover Samuels.
This was despite concerns raised by Immigration over undisclosed aliases and multiple passports.
In court documents, the Crown says a police officer in China helped Mr Yan to create false identities, because he was wary of his political connections there.
Mr Yan told an immigration officer he had big support from a number of New Zealand MPs.
Yong Ming Yan will next appear in the Auckland District Court later this month.
