Waipukurau's water supply will continue to be fluoridated despite a local survey showing a majority wanted it stopped.
The survey showed 439 people wanted fluoridation to end and 297 supported its continuation. Some 1600 property owners were asked their opinion.
Central Hawke's Bay District Council says its decision was reached following a thorough consultation process, which also included input from health officials and dentists.
Mayor Trish Giddens says fluoridating water is still a very important health issue and that's why council has decided to continue doing it.
The question arose because the fluoride dosing system at the Waipukurau water treatment plant is due to be replaced. Fluoridation began in the town in 1979.
