Two earthquakes hit near Palmerston North on Thursday morning.
GNS Science says the first tremor, of 5.1 magnitude, struck at 7.04am, 10km south of Palmerston North at a depth of 40km.
It says the tremor was felt throughout the North Island.
A second earthquake of 4.3 magnitude was recorded in the same place at 8.05am.
