Labour seeks inquiry into homelessness

4:31 pm on 23 November 2009

The Labour Party wants a select committee inquiry to be held into the issue of homelessness in New Zealand.

The party's housing spokesperson, Moana Mackey, will ask the social services committee to look at how and why people become homeless.

She says an inquiry would provide valuable information about the issue, which she says is a drain on health and social services, as well as the police and courts.

The National Party has a majority on the committee but Ms Mackey hopes its MPs will put politics aside and support her request.
