New Zealand secured a thrilling 32-run victory over Pakistan at the University Oval in Dunedin with five late wickets in the final session.
Set 250 to win, Pakistan needed just 86 runs to win after tea but were all out for 218.
In a key moment the 19-year-old Pakistan debutant Umar Akmal was out caught and bowled by man of the match Shane Bond for 75.
The New Zealand cricket captain Daniel Vettori says the return of pace bowler Bond was the key to their victory.
Bond took 3 wickets for 46 to end the Test with 8 for 153.
The second Test begins in Wellington on Thursday.
