North Shore council scraps parking charge plan

6:05 am on 3 December 2009

The North Shore City Council has backed away from a plan to charge commuters for parking alongside New Zealand's first dedicated busway.

The council had been considering charging $2 a day for parking at the park-and-ride stations, because a funding shortfall had put pressure on them to cut costs.

But a councillor and representative on the Auckland Regional Transport Committee, Chris Darby, says a council committee has night rejected the charge.

He free parking is one of the reasons for the busway's success, and the council will ask for more funding from the Auckland Regional Transport Authority and the New Zealand Transport Authority.
