All Coromandel's flood-hit roads clear again

9:01 pm on 5 December 2009

The AA says all closures on flood-hit State Highways 25 and 25A on the Coromandel peninsula have been cleared.

State Highway 25 from Tairua to Hikuai and SH25A from south of Hikuai to Kopu were both reopened late on Saturday afternoon.

Heavy rain kept the Fire Service busy on Friday night, with more than 20 homes flooded in Auckland and the Coromandel peninsula.

By late Saturday afternoon the shift manager for the service's northern communications centre, Paul Radden, was able to report that all the flooded properties had been dealt with and it had turned into a fairly quiet day.

Houses flooded throughout north

Earlier, the Fire Service had reported that people in several properties at Kuaotunu on the Coromandel peninsula were trapped by floodwaters, though they were not in danger. Sewage flooded a Waikawau house, forcing the family to leave, Mr Radden said.

Whitianga had 120mm of rain over a 24-hour period, while 112mm fell in Golden Valley.

Further north, four homes at Stanmore Bay on the Whangaparaoa peninsula were flooded on Friday evening.

Houses were also flooded in the Auckland suburbs of Ellerslie, Orakei, Remuera and Mt Wellington, as were properties in an entire street, Vida Pl, Howick. A house in Meadowbank was flooded with sewage.

A woman trapped by rising floodwaters in her car beneath a motorway overpass in Ellerslie had to be rescued by firefighters.

Slips in western North Island

A large slip blocked southbound traffic on State Highway 45 in New Plymouth, between Omata and Beach Road, on Saturday morning.

Another slip blocked the southbound lane of SH3, south of Te Kuiti, between Piopio and Paemako.
