7:35 pm on 9 December 2009

Dunedin police have launched a homicide inquiry following the discovery of a man's body near the Scott Memorial lookout above Port Chalmers.

A member of the public discovered the body early on Wednesday afternoon on the track adjacent to the lookout, which is on Blueskin Road.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kallum Croudis says the man died by violent means, but would not describe the injuries.

He says his immediate concern is to identify the man, and to locate the owner of a grey vehicle found at the lookout.

The man is believed to be between 20 and 30 years old, and was wearing a grey hooded jacket with light blue polar fleece pants and grey shorts.

A full police scene examination will begin on Thursday, with assistance from a pathologist and forensic staff.
