Security forces in Yemen say they have killed 34 al-Qaeda fighters and arrested 17 in foiling a planned series of suicide bomb attacks.

The incident took place in Abyan province in the south and in Arhab directorate, north of the capital Sanaa.

A security source says the intended targets were foreign and local interests and schools.

The BBC reports al-Qaeda has launched several attacks in recent months against security targets in Yemen.
