The manager of an Auckland women's prison has praised her staff for intercepting millions of dollars worth of the class A drug LSD.
Prison officers at Auckland Region Women's Corrections Facility in Manukau found the consignment while doing a routine search of a visitor's car last month.
Agnes Robertson says they helped to take a very dangerous substance off the streets. She says the haul is the largest amount of drugs ever found at a prison.
Police say the amount intercepted was equivalent to 50,000 tabs of the drug and was worth up to $2.5 million.
It was found during a routine search of the car of a man who went to the prison to obtain an application form for visiting a prisoner.
Police say he faces two charges of possessing class A drugs for supply and two charges of possessing class C drugs for supply.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Lynch says a number of drugs, utensils and thousands of dollars in New Zealand and foreign currency wereallegedly found in the car.
Mr Lynch says about 2.5 milligrams of almost pure lysergic acid was also found, a form of LSD that has not been found in the country before.
