A Christchurch man is recovering after being robbed and beaten at an ATM early on Wednesday morning.

The 45-year-old was confronted at the Kiwibank ATM on Lincoln Road near Spencer Street at about 3am.

Two men, described as possibly part Maori, punched the victim in the face before knocking him to the ground, kicking him in the ribs and stealing his bike helmet.

Police say the victim is now recovering at home but is still in some discomfort and will be formally interviewed in the coming days.

It's believed the suspects may have committed similar offences before, and police want to hear from anyone who knows their identity.
