New list of cabinet nominees submitted to parliament

4:31 pm on 10 January 2010

President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan has presented a new list of cabinet nominees to parliament, after MPs rejected most of his original choices.

None of the 17 previous nominees not accepted on 2 January are in the latest list.

Members of parliament will question each of the nominees before voting in a secret ballot. The process is expected to take several days.

The BBC reports Mr Karzai wants to finalise his cabinet before an international conference on Afghanistan in London later this month.

Mr Karzai was returned for a second five-year term after an election last August, despite investigators discovering more than a quarter of votes were fraudulent.
