'Operational error' sees train head in wrong direction

KiwiRail is apologising after what it calls an operational error led to a Paraparaumu-bound train accidentally ending up headed towards the Hutt Valley.

Passengers on the 8.30am service from Wellington to Paraparaumu on Thursday had to get off the train at Ngauranga Station, when it was realised it was going in the wrong direction.

A spokesperson for KiwiRail, which runs the Trans Metro service, says another train then took the passengers to Kaiwharawhara station, where they were able to get on the next train to Paraparaumu.

KiwiRail says is still looking into exactly why the mistake occurred.
