Loan scheme sought to pay for cameras in taxis

The New Zealand Taxi Federation is calling for the Government to set up a loan scheme to help drivers install security cameras in their cabs.

The Government says it is considering what extra security measures should be introduced following the fatal stabbing of Auckland taxi driver Hiren Mohini on Sunday morning.

Taxi Federation executive director Tim Reddish says mandatory controls will not be popular within the industry and the expense of installing cameras may be too much for some drivers.

"A lot in the industry ... are leading a hand-to-mouth existence and they don't have the funds available to do it, so hopefully in these discussions with the minister we may be able to organise some sort of loan guarantee scheme."

Mr Reddish hopes to meet with Transport Minister Steven Joyce in the next two weeks.
