Seed harvest delayed

12:50 pm on 3 February 2010

Wet conditions in parts of Canterbury have delayed the harvest of grass seed crops. Some farmers predict a fall in yield and quality of some seeds.

Hot, humid weather during January has disrupted the ryegrass harvest on the upper-mid Canterbury Plains.

Federated Farmers Mid-Canterbury grain and seed chair David Clark, says normally hot conditions would be enough to dry out the newly-cut crops so the seeds can be easily extracted, but that's not the case this year.

He says drying facilities are under huge pressure.

He says wet weather has also affected vegetable seed growers and hot weather is needed.
