West questions Iran nuclear deal claim

10:50 am on 7 February 2010

Western powers have responded with scepticism to a claim by Iran that a deal with world powers over its nuclear programme is close.

A major international gathering of security officials is being held in Germany to discuss the offer for Iran to send enriched uranium overseas in exchange for nuclear fuel.

Iran's Foreign Minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, says a deal could be reached in the not too distant future.

The Iranian comments came after Mr Mottaki decided to join the Munich conference at the last minute.

He did not, however, mention the key issue of timing, and he also insisted that the quantity of fuel involved should be up to Iran, the BBC reports.

However the US and European Union say they are unconvinced and Iran must make a meaningful offer or face new sanctions.

China, opposed to imposing new sanctions against Tehran, said talks with the international community had reached a "crucial stage".

The US and its allies fear Iran is attempting to develop nuclear weapons. Iran insists its nuclear programme is peaceful in purpose.
