20/20 sixes seen as danger to crowds

Updated at 7:14pm on 8 February 2010

Spectators at 20/20 matches could be given warnings to stop them being injured by cricket balls.

New Zealand Cricket says it is considering introducing a safety campaign because the 20/20 format features many more sixes and big shots into the crowd.

Measures such as warning signs could be in place next season.

Hamilton City Council event facilities manager Mark Christie, who runs Seddon Park, says the message may not get through right away, especially when crowds are in a boisterous mood.

He says consistency would be the key, making sure the message is given to fans at every game until it becomes second nature.
