Book store warned about misleading promotion

Updated at 8:44pm on 9 February 2010

The Commerce Commission has issed a warning to the Borders bookstore chain about misleading fine print in a promotion.

The commission says that a pre-Christmas voucher deal risked breaching the Fair Trading Act.

In November and December last year Borders advertised a promotion with the headline offer: "Receive $20 in vouchers for every $75 you spend".

However, the small print specified that customers could redeem one $10 voucher in January and another in February.

Customers complained to the commission saying that they felt misled thinking they could get a $20 voucher for one purchase.

Borders has now agreed to honour the vouchers this way.

The commission says it will not take any further action, but will continue to monitor book promotions by Borders.
