The Conservation Authority has identified an area it thinks is suitable for a kauri national park in Northland.
It's centred on the Waipoua forest north of Dargaville, which includes Tane Mahuta, New Zealand's largest known living kauri.
Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson says only 2% of New Zealand's kauri remain, mostly in the forests of Northland where there are no national parks.
The Department of Conservation will formally investigate the values of the area.
