A man has been charged with assault with a weapon following an incident in Opotiki in which a police officer was threatened with a machete.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen says the incident was dealt with swiftly by the use of police dogs and the Armed Offenders Squad.
Mr Standen says the safety of residents in the immediate area was never compromised and police were the only people approached by the accused.
A 37-year-old was due to face a number of charges at the Whakatane District Court on Saturday.
