Another boat carrying asylum seekers has been intercepted off the north coast of Australia.

The vessel carrying 41 passengers and four crew was found north-west of Ashmore Islands.

Those on board are being taken to Christmas island for health, security and identity checks.

Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison says the number of asylum seekers arriving in Australia is out of control.

He says 13 boats have arrived in seven weeks this year with more than 700 people aboard.

The ABC reports the Christmas Island detention centre is almost at capacity. The government said recently it is boosting the number of places from 1850 to 2200 people.
