Name of girl's killer made public

2:43 pm on 20 February 2010

Name suppression is over for a teenager convicted of killing a schoolgirl in Kerikeri in 2008.

Hermanus Theodorus Kriel, 15, known as Theo Kriel, was convicted by a jury in the High Court at Whangarei on Friday of murder and indecent assault.

The body of Liberty Templeman, 15, was found face-down in a stream in an abandoned orchard on 1 November 2008, a day after she disappeared.

Kriel confessed six days afterwards to bashing and strangling her.

The trial lasted two weeks. The finding was by a majority verdict of 11-1.

Name suppression has been in place since Kriel was charged, but Justice Asher ruled it would be lifted at midday on Saturday.

Justice Asher said it was in the public interest for the name to be known.

Kriel is in custody and will be sentenced on 26 March.
