Shipping regulations to be reviewed

6:10 am on 1 March 2010

Maritime New Zealand is planning a review of the regulatory systems which cover safe management of shipping visiting New Zealand.

Sectors of the shipping industry debated the issue at a conference of the Maritime Law Association in Napier last week.

Chairman Paul David says opinions about what changes are needed to ensure ships which visit New Zealand are safe and don't pollute the environment, vary between shipping companies, regulators and marine surveyors.

He expects Maritime New Zealand to issue a consultation document on safe ship management in about six weeks.
