Removal of toothpaste regulations hailed

The Food and Grocery Council describes plans to remove regulations on some fluoride toothpastes and anti-dandruff shampoos as a common sense step.

The Ministry of Health says toothpastes and anti-dandruff products commonly sold in supermarkets would no longer be regulated under medicines legislation.

It says the proposed changes will also bring New Zealand in line with other countries, including Australia.

The Food and Grocery Council says not having to register with Medsafe could also save companies between $50,000 and $100,000 per registration.

Chief executive Katherine Rich says that cost has put many companies off launching products here.
