Iraqi expatriates vote in election

11:48 am on 6 March 2010

Iraqi expatriates have begun voting ahead of the main polling day for a general election in their country on Sunday.

The United Nations estimates around 2 million Iraqis live abroad. The largest number are in Jordan and Syria.

Friday is also the last day of campaigning in Iraq, amid pre-election violence and heavy security.

The election commission has polling stations in nearly 60 cities worldwide and voting is staggered over three days. More than 6000 candidates are competing for 325 seats.

Security forces, detainees and hospital patients voted on Thursday. A high turnout was reported, with estimates suggesting 800,000 people cast ballots.

Travel around the country is restricted and all leave for security services is cancelled.

More than 200,000 security personnel will be on duty in Baghdad on Sunday.
