Council inspects bungy ride

10:38 pm on 8 March 2010

Wellington City Council was to inspect an adventure ride in the city centre on Monday after the Fire Service had to rescue three people because of a mechanical fault.

The council says it allowed the Bungy Extreme ride, on Taranaki Street, to maintain its licence to continue operating, although a worker there said it was closed on Sunday for repairs.

Bungy Extreme director John Saunders says the ride is safe and operating as normal.

Mr Saunders says the fault was a minor hydraulics failure and was not a safety issue.

He says it meant the pin release would not work, so a manual wind-down procedure was followed - a standard practice in line with Department of Labour rules.

Mr Saunders says the incident has been blown out of proportion because the Fire Service was called after a staff member cut his hand.

The Department of Labour says it is investigating the incident.

The same ride had to be closed temporarily six months ago when one of its elastic cords snapped.
