7:28 am on 9 March 2010

A strong magnitude 6 earthquake has killed 57 villagers in eastern Turkey, with rescuers working to free survivors trapped under the rubble.

The magnitude 6.0 quake woke residents of Basyurt in Elazig province from their sleep and was followed by 30 minor aftershocks.

Hospital workers and relatives have been ferrying casualties from cars and ambulances into the state hospital in the nearby town of Kovancilar.

The provincial crisis centre says 50 people have been injured, 10 of them seriously.

The quake was centred near the town of Karakocan, at 4.32am on Monday.

The United States Geological Survey says the quake was shallow, at a depth of 11 kilometres.
