No sign of yacht in satellite sweep

An American satellite search has failed to find a missing yacht off the East Coast of the North Island.

The Rescue Coordination Centre asked the US Coastguard to use its technology to help look for Paul Van Rensburg and his vessel, after a fruitless air search last week.

Paul van Rensburg left Tauranga with his dog on 12 March to sail to Gisborne, where he was due to start a new job.

The search is now officially suspended until there is new information.

An extensive search by the Rescue Coordination Centre last week failed to find any signs of the experienced sailor or his vessel, the 11-metre yacht Tafadzwa.

It was suspended on Thursday after an aerial sweep covering nearly 330,000 square kilometres of ocean, but a group of his supporters wanted it restarted.
