Google redirecting China site to Hong Kong

The internet giant Google says it is giving people in China uncensored access to its search engine by redirecting them to a Google site in Hong Kong.

It says the site is designed specifically for users on the mainland and it will closely monitor access to it.

That means the American company has stopped censoring its search results in China, ignoring warnings by the country's authorities.

In January, Google had complained about a sophisticated cyber attack originating from China.

Chinese government officials had warned Google repeatedly that it would face consequences if it did not comply with the country's censorship rules.

The company says providing the uncensored search through the Hong Kong site is a sensible solution to the challenges it has faced.
