A man is missing after failing to return from swimming with friends at a Northland beach on Monday afternoon.
Police say the man, who is in his twenties, was swimming with a group at Ngunguru Beach, about 26 kilometres south west of Whangarei, when he went missing .
A helicopter and coastguard spent the afternoon looking for the man and a shoreline search of the beach is continuing.
