Plane forced to land at Auckland airport

3:20 pm on 9 April 2010

An investigation has begun after a plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Auckland Airport on Friday.

The Eagle Air plane carrying nine passengers and three staff was headed for Whangarei but the pilot declared a full scale emergency at 8.20am after a cargo door opened just after take-off.

A spokesperson for the Transport Accident Investigation Commission says it appears a rear cargo door opened, causing some damage.

Peter Northcote says the plane arrived safely back at Auckland Airport and no one was injured in the incident.

The commission has begun an inquiry and has impounded the plane.

Air New Zealand, which owns Eagle Air, has apologised for the incident and is also investigating the incident.
