The New Zealand makers of a fuel efficiency device are planning to take their invention worldwide.

The Electronic Performance Monitor has been developed by driver training facility Boomrock and the Wellington Institute of Technology.

The device relays a driver's brake and accelerator movements to a computer, which analyses the data, which is used to assist driver training.

Boomrock spokesperson Peter Sheppard says drivers generally reduce their fuel usage by 30% to 40% once they're given specific training.

He says a fuel saving of 10% could equate to millions of dollars for big fleet operators.

Mr Sheppard says the company believes there's a big international market for the monitoring device.
