Online petition on electoral referendum launched

8:45 am on 21 April 2010

An online petition has been launched by the Put MMP to the Vote lobby group to allow the public to voice their opinions on the forthcoming referendum on the electoral voting system.

The referendum, to take place at the same time as the 2011 General Election, will ask voters if they'd like to retain or change the electoral voting system - and if there was a change, which voting system they would choose.

If the vote is in favour of changing the current system, a second, binding referendum will be held during the 2014 General Election.

The co-founder of Put MMP to the Vote, Peter Shirtcliffe, says the process is flawed, and the Government needs to engage with the public.

However, Campaign for MMP lobby group spokesperson Sandra Gray says New Zealanders will get the opportunity to voice concerns as the Government has given an assurance the referendum will go to a full select committee process.

Put MMP to the Vote will present its petition to the government in several weeks time.
