Oil still being pumped from coal ship

3:56 pm on 30 April 2010

Oil is still being from a Chinese coal ship, the Shen Neng 1, off the coast of central Queensland. The vessel ran aground on Douglas Shoal at Easter.

It was refloated on 12 April and now lies at anchor about five nautical miles off the coast of Gladstone.

Maritime Safety Queensland says as much oil as possible is being removed from the ship but there will be some that cannot be accessed.

A decision will be made soon about when to will try to bring the ship into Gladstone Harbour. Weather will be the deciding factor.

The ABC reports the ship is still fully loaded with coal and has no engine power, so it will be difficult to manoeuvre.
