Prison sentence for conman

11:54 am on 1 May 2010

A conman who stole from elderly people has been sentenced at the Christchurch District Court to five years in prison.

Lachlan Patrick Irvine, 30, selected his victims from people he had met while delivering meals on wheels.

He later went back to their homes and in one case introduced himself as a police officer investigating the illegal use of a bank account to get the pin number for a cash card.

He stole thousands of dollars and sentimental items including army certificates and citations belonging to the late husband of one of his victims.

The sentencing judge said the offending was about as cold and callous as it gets.
