Prison sentence for Letterman blackmailer

A TV producer has been sentenced to six months in prison for trying to blackmail American chat show host, David Letterman.

Robert Halderman, 52, pleaded guilty in March to attempting to extort $US2 from Mr Letterman.

He was also given 1000 hours of community service.

The BBC reports Halderman asked for $US2 million from Letterman last year for not exposing sexual relationships with female members of staff.

In court, his lawyer said he had suffered jealousy and was having financial problems at the time.

The case opened Mr Letterman's private life to scrutiny. Mr Letterman, 62, has admitted the affairs.

But ratings for his programme, The Late Show, have remained strong.
