The policy contest for the Auckland mayoralty has opened with one of the contenders promising to review the new regional transport agency if it does not work as expected.
Len Brown says he would make sure big council-owned organisations follow clear political direction and conduct most of their business in public.
The power given to the agencies that will manage Auckland's transport and water in particular has been the subject of heated debate.
A Parliamentary select committee this week strengthened the control the new Auckland Council will have over the agencies.
Mayoral contender Len Brown says he would order a review of the transport agency's future after two years if he's not satisfied it is working well.
Mr Brown, who is currently Mayor of Manukau City, also says he would demand monthly meetings with agency leaders and require them to hold meetings in public.
The new Auckland Council comes into being on 1 November.
