Video footage of a late-night attack has been played at the trial of two police officers charged with assaulting four men while off-duty.
Constables Wiremu Rakatau and Patrick Garty deny the charges, which are being heard in the Auckland District Court.
The prosecution says the victims were walking home at about 1am in when they found and moved a supermarket shopping trolley. It says the defendants, who were walking past, spoke to them before following them to an apartment building.
It's alleged that the men were then punched, shoved and kicked in the building's foyer. The closed-circuit TV footage shown in court today allegedly depicts the attack.
Another police officer, Chris Renata, is also alleged to have been involved in the incident. He'll answer a common assault charge on 28 June.
