Use of public transport in Auckland up 4%

The Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) says it is heartened by figures showing that more people in the region are using public transport.

ARTA says that, compared with the same time last year, 193,000 more people used public transport in April - an increase of 4%.

Rail usage rose by 13.7%, ferry by 7.4% and bus by 2.1%.

In the 10 months to April, the authority says, a million more journeys were made by public transport than were made in the same period a year before.

That's pleasing, ARTA says, particularly given that Auckland's bus services were halted by industrial action late last year.

Spokesperson Sharon Hunter says investment of nearly $1 billion in the rail network is paying off.
