Strike closes Tahiti airport

1:12 pm on 12 June 2010

International flights to and from French Polynesia have been cancelled due to a general strike.

The strike began early on Friday, following unsuccessful talks with the government and the French High Commission over union demands to relaunch the economy, improve employment and reform social security provisions.

A flight from Noumea was the first to be cancelled at Tahiti airport.

Flights from Auckland and Los Angeles were also cancelled.

The action has also paralysed the port of Papeete, stopping the Moorea ferry, but schools managed to open for the national French school exams.

Radio New Zealand International reports there have been sit-ins at some public buildings.
